The Flinch

Novemember 26, 2018

Show Notes:

You know that moment of hesitation before asking someone out, demanding a raise, or taking a cold shower? According to Julien Smith, that’s the flinch, and fear of the flinch is what’s preventing you from being a champion. Kenyon and Kwamin are definitely interested in being champions and they ask what the first step is to understanding, and getting over, the flinch. Julien says to understand the flinch, watch kids at play (a risky proposition for three men in their twenties, one of whom is balding). Most kids on the playground show no sign of fear. This fear is what prevents us from losing weight, getting a date, getting that dream job, etc. To get over the flinch we find out Julien has homework for us. One is to take cold showers and just jump in without hesitating. Another is to break one of your mugs (‘the strength you gain by letting more more important than any object’). He also instructs you to make small talk with strangers. Finally, the last piece of homework is to pass this copy of the flinch on to someone else (a brilliant piece of self promotion but how is this going to help me land a date?) Since we have such well defined homework it should be easy to see if the flinch works. One week later… Kenyon learns that taking cold showers is possibly the worst thing ever, especially in the middle of the winter. He thinks it didn’t help him get over the flinch, but it did help him catch hypothermia. He also burned a cherished birthday card (because he didn’t own a mug) and made a lot of small talk. Cole also made some small talk that week but only because he was bit by a dog while walking down the street. Subscribe, Rate, and Review on iTunes - Link Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook
